Ubuntu and the HP tx2000

With the new Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx in hand, it was time to evaluate how much would work out-of-the-box on it. My last experiences with this were less than satisfactory, but I also was aware that Linux came a long way since then.

So, jumping off the cliff, I installed the 32bit version on my laptop, and to my surprise, the installation was quick and painless and the system booted up smoothly and almost everything just worked !

So instead of giving you a list of what works, here is a list of what does not work :

- Wireless network
- Fingerprint authentication
- Some hotkeys like rotate screen.
- Automatic screen rotation when put in tablet mode.

So this means that the touch screen capabilities of this laptop work out of the box. Well done developers at Ubuntu / Gnome / etc !

So, how do we get the other things to work then ?

First thing i did was to get the wireless up and running. You will need to download a few things so you need another pc with internet connection and a usb stick, or if you have dualboot you can use windows to download it or you can plug in a network cable as that works fine out of the box.

First Post

Hi there.

Lately I have made the transition from Windows to Linux, meaning my reasons to leave Windows became numerous enough to try my luck with something else, and of course, Linux being as appealing as it is, it became my choice. The Ubuntu distribution to be exact because it offered the smallest download and looked the easiest to begin with.

I have tried many different flavors of Linux before in the past 15 years, and up to now, none of them quite cut it for me, but it seems Ubuntu looks promising enough (or dumbed down enough) to look usable and provide a reasonably clean ride to the linux world as a former windows user.

The main reason why I kicked Windows off my disks ? Well. It’s not that Windows isn’t a good OS, it’s just that I got fed up with it for a long time now and it was time to try something different. Let’s just leave it at that.

So, when you are ready, come along for my joyride with tux on my side. This blog will cover anything i ran into, enjoyed, hated etc and maybe you too are ready to make the switch at some point.
